Welcome to the site of Reading Buddhist Priory.

The Priory was founded in 1990 as a temple of the Serene Reflection (Soto Zen) tradition of Buddhism and is part of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives (www.obcon.org)which has temples around the UK and in Germany, the Netherlands, Canada and North America.

It traces its lineage through its Founder, Rev, Master Jiyu Kennett, to Japan where she trained in the 1960s, and from there to China in 1200 through Great Master Dogen, and from there to India through Great Master Bodhidharma who travelled to China around 500 AD. The historical person and Founder of the religion, Shakyamuni Buddha, lived in India around 500 years BC.

The Priory has had a number of resident monks over the years. At present, Rev. Jishin Kinson is Prior. She is a senior monk and disciple of Rev. Master Daishin Morgan, who is the Abbot of Throssel Hole Buddhist Abbey and the Priory's patron. She oversees the running of a calendar of events and regular weekly activities and is a support to those who practice in the tradition or are interested in finding out more about it.

The priory is a registered charity (no. 1092463)and is supported entirely by donations.
